PATHWAYS TO PRACTICAL NURSING
(LPN) IN ARKANSAS
PRACTICAL NURSING
The practical
nurse programs listed are both public and private. Public programs are located
in universities; community colleges; technical colleges an institutes; and vocational-technical
schools. All of the practical nurse (PN) programs listed have been approved
by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. NLN accreditation is available for PN
programs. Those programs with an asterisk(*) are NLN accredited, which indicates
they have met national standard of excellence.
A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required for admission. Each program sets its own standards for admission; check with the program for its requirement. Tuition is subject to change, and schools should be contacted for recent information.
At the completion of the program the student is granted a certificate. The graduate is eligible to write the national licensure examination, and upon successful completion will become an LPN.
The LPN is prepared to give
nursing care under the supervision of an RN or physician, to patients in simple
nursing situations. In more complex situation the LPN functions as an assistant
to the RN. The LPN is employed in hospitals, extended care facilities, nursing
homes and clinics.
